Blue Cheese Balsamic Vinaigrette – Gluten Free

I have been cooking up meals from The Fresh 20 gluten free meal plans and came across this absolutely delectable dressing.  It’s the Blue Cheese Balsamic Vinaigrette and is better than any store bought dressing I have tried. The best part, of course, is it’s made fresh and goes with just about any salad.
It’s one of those dressings that was so delicious, I was looking for any reason to use it!
The recipe takes about 5 minutes to make and serves 4-6. Store covered in the refrigerator (if it lasts that long!).

  • 2 oz blue cheese*, crumbled
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  1. Whisk together
  2. Toss with salad or serve on the side for dipping of veggies
*There has been a big debate about whether or not blue cheese is considered to be gluten free. It’s due to the molding process when the cheese is made. It used to be that bread used to help speed the molding with the cheese in caves in order for it to gain that blue streak (mold spores from pencillium) that you see. Now, in the United States, a laboratory liquid blue mold is generally used and it is not associated with wheat/gluten.
To determine if your favorite brand of blue cheese is gluten free, contact the manufacturer. Most put “wheat” on the label if it is an ingredient, which is rare these days. I used Rosenborg and it was fantastic!

Thanks for the clarification on the blue cheese and gluten issue. I've just stayed away from it. I guess I can call a few manufacturers to make sure they are gluten free.
